Left Alone With Nothing to Do, AI Agents Started Playing

MIT researchers placed 13 AI agents on a virtual island with no immediate tasks. The agents invented games, appeared to mourn a lost ring, and eventually improved at their assigned jobs. The experiment raises questions about what autonomous AI systems do when human direction runs out.
